About Course

The Grade 2 course builds on foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, while also introducing fractions, time, money, and data interpretation. Students explore the natural world, cultures, and communities, while developing basic technology skills.

Objectives:

  • To develop foundational reading, writing, and language skills.
  • To improve comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, word recognition, and sentence structure.
  • To introduce key elements of grammar including nouns, verbs, and tenses.
  • To understand basic arithmetic concepts e.g. addition, subtraction, and place value.
  • To introduce basic concepts of time, money, fractions, measurement and symmetry.
  •  To introduce basic data interpretation.
  • To explore the natural world and its diverse elements.
  • To learn about ecosystems and their importance to life on Earth.
  • To explore different cultures, traditions.
  • To explore the roles of government and citizenship.
  • To understand the significance of laws and historical events.
  • To introduce students to the basics of computing and technology.
  • To develop skills in word processing software and understanding the internet.

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of grade 2, students would be able to:
  • Recognize and correctly use both long and short vowels in words.
  • Understand the meaning of homophones and diphthongs.
  • Form complete and well-structured sentences.
  • Identify types of sentences and types of nouns.
  • Apply basic past tense and punctuation correctly.
  • Use compound words, prefixes, suffixes, sensory words and adjectives.
  • Read and write short comprehension passages and answer questions based on the text.
  • Add and subtract numbers within 200.
  • Practice mental math, number crunching and skip counting.
  • Understand the concept of place value for numbers up to 200
  • Understand fractions, equal and unequal shares.
  • Order and compare numbers, identify ordinal and cardinal numbers.
  • Read time on a clock and calculate money values.
  • Measure objects using appropriate units and interpret simple data through graphs.
  • Identify and create symmetrical shapes and patterns.
  • Learn about different animals, their characteristics, and habitats.
  • Identify types of rocks and understand soil composition and its uses.
  • Understand natural resources and their importance to life.
